Procedures

Rest assured Dr Keegan is highly skilled in all these procedures. He has undertaken extensive training in centres of excellence in Australia, the United Kingdom, and France, for advanced and highly specialised procedures and endoscopic techniques.

Dr Keegan’s training and credentials have been recognised in Australia by the Conjoint Committee for Recognition of Training in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

He is also an active member of a multidisciplinary cancer care team that brings together consultant doctors from different medical specialisations to coordinate care for people with cancer.

GASTROSCOPY

Gastroscopy (also known as upper endoscopy) is a safe and minimally invasive way for your doctor to assess the upper part of your gastrointestinal tract.

EUS (Endoscopic Ultrasound)

EUS is a specialised type of endoscopy that uses high-resolution ultrasound images to assess structures inside the wall of the gut, or in structures near the gut, such as the bile ducts or pancreas. It can be used for imaging diagnosis, biopsy, and treatment.

SIGMOIDOSCOPY

Flexible sigmoidoscopy is a medical procedure that allows doctors to examine the inside of the rectum and the lower part of the colon (large bowel) for signs of illness. It may be used to follow up issues identified in the rectum or low colon during a prior colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy.

OTHER ADVANCED ENDOSCOPIC PROCEDURES

Coming soon.

COLONOSCOPY

Colonoscopy is a common and safe procedure to examine the lower parts of the digestive tract (colon and rectum). It is important in the early detection, and even prevention of, colorectal cancer.

ENTEROSCOPY

Device or balloon assisted enteroscopy is a newer, advanced endoscopy technique used to reach and treat findings deep within the small bowel. Prior to the development of this procedure these areas were difficult to reach and often required surgery.

ESD (Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection)

ESD is a highly specialised technique performed by specially trained expert endoscopists used for removal of larger precancerous lesions or early cancers from the gut lining. ESD is most often performed in the oepshagus, stomach, colon or rectum.

ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-pancreatography)

ERCP is a medical procedure that uses an endoscope (a thin, flexible tube with a camera and light) combined with x-ray images to examine the bile ducts, pancreatic ducts, and gallbladder.

EMR (Endoscopic Mucosal Resection)

EMR is a highly specialised technique performed by specially trained expert endoscopists used for removal of larger precancerous lesions or early cancers from the gut lining. EMR is performed in the oepshagus, stomach, colon or rectum, as well as the duodenum (first portion of the small bowel).

HAEMORRHOID TREATMENT

Haemorrhoids, also known as piles, are lumps that occur inside and around the anus (back passage) due to congested blood vessels. They are very common and can cause symptoms such as bleeding, pain, discomfort, and itchiness around the anus. If you have haemorrhoids, it is important to get checked out by a doctor to make sure your symptoms are not a sign of something more serious.

What can you do to reduce your risk of bowel cancer?

Endoscopic screening and maintaining a healthy lifestyle are two major approaches to bowel cancer prevention. Dr Keegan is a huge proponent of bowel cancer screening to facilitate early detection for high-risk patients, and he is also an advocate of helping his patients make healthy lifestyle choices that can reduce cancer risk.

Dr Keegan has a holistic, evidence-based and thorough approach to the care of his patients. Research shows that some risk factors — such as lifestyle or environmental risk factors — are modifiable. Dr Keegan wants to help his patients reduce their risk factors and achieve optimal health.
